FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions — Assam Engineering College

Yes. Assam Engineering College (AEC) is a government-aided autonomous institute under the Government of Assam. It is one of the oldest government engineering colleges in Northeast India, established in 1955. It is affiliated with Gauhati University and approved by AICTE, with multiple departments holding NBA accreditation.

JEE Main cutoffs for AEC vary by branch. For 2025, CSE closed at approximately rank 28,000 (General category). ECE closed at ~55,000, and Civil at ~1.5 lakhs. Assam domicile students get 85% reservation and can also apply through Assam CEE, where cutoffs are significantly different. Always check the latest JOSAA data and AEC official portal for updated cutoffs.

The annual B.Tech fee at AEC is approximately ₹67,000–₹80,000 per year (all inclusive). Over 4 years, the total B.Tech cost is approximately ₹2.8–3.2 lakhs in fees. With hostel and living expenses, the total cost is approximately ₹1.5–2 lakhs per year — making AEC one of the most affordable engineering colleges in India with strong placement outcomes.

Computer Science & Engineering has the highest placement packages (avg ₹6–8 LPA, highest ₹12 LPA) and is the most sought-after branch. Electronics & Communication is a close second. Civil and Mechanical have strong government and PSU placement records (ONGC, OIL, L&T, NHPC). Mining Engineering is unique to AEC in NE India and has excellent PSU placement for COAL India and OIL.

NIT Silchar is a centrally funded institution with a higher national ranking and generally higher placement packages (avg ₹7–10 LPA vs AEC’s ₹4–6 LPA). However, AEC has a stronger presence for Assam domicile students, lower fees, better location (Guwahati vs Silchar), and a larger alumni network within Assam’s government and PSU sector. For students from Assam targeting PSU/government jobs or local industry, AEC is often a preferred choice over NIT Silchar’s lower branches.

Yes. AEC has 8 boys hostels and 2 girls hostels on campus with a combined capacity of 2,500+ students. Hostel fees are ₹25,000–₹35,000 per year. Facilities include mess, common room, WiFi, reading room, and sports facilities within the hostel premises. Hostel allocation is merit-based and preference is given to outstation students.
