Established in 2010 by the Ministry of Education (formerly MHRD), NIT Sikkim is the state’s only Institute of National Importance for engineering. Ranked in the NIRF Engineering band nationally, it offers B.Tech programmes across Computer Science, Electronics, Electrical, Civil, and Mechanical Engineering at heavily subsidised government fees. Admission is exclusively through JEE Main followed by JoSAA/CSAB counselling — making it by far the most competitive and prestigious engineering seat in the state.

Sikkim’s largest and most established private engineering institute, founded in 1997 on a 35-acre campus in Majitar on the banks of the Teesta river. NAAC A+ accredited and AICTE approved, SMIT offers B.Tech across Computer Science, AI & ML, Electronics, Electrical, Mechanical and Civil Engineering. Achieved 85% placements in 2024, with recruiters including Accenture, IBM, Bosch, Cognizant, Amazon and Axis Bank. Admission is via the Sikkim Manipal Entrance Test (SMET) or merit-based selection.

SRM University Sikkim brings the pan-India SRM Group’s engineering ecosystem to Gangtok, offering B.Tech in Computer Science, IT, Electronics & Communication, and allied streams. Students benefit from cross-campus resources, industry tie-ups, and a curriculum aligned with SRM’s larger Chennai and Delhi-NCR campuses. Admission is largely merit-based with CUET scores accepted for select seats.

Part of the ICFAI Group of universities, ICFAI University Sikkim offers B.Tech engineering programmes alongside its well-known law and management schools in Gangtok. The compact multi-disciplinary campus gives engineering students exposure to business and legal coursework as electives, which appeals to students eyeing techno-managerial careers. Merit scholarships are available based on Class XII performance.

An autonomous government institution set up in 1999 at Bardang on NH-10, ATTC is one of only two state-run polytechnics in Sikkim. AICTE approved, it offers 3-year diploma programmes in Civil, Mechanical, Mechatronics, Computer, and Manufacturing Technology on an 8-acre campus. Admission is class 10th merit-based with no entrance exam, making it the most affordable engineering pathway in the state for students who want to start with a diploma.

Sikkim’s second state-run polytechnic under the Directorate of Technical Education, CCCT specialises in computer science and communication technology diploma programmes. It’s the go-to affordable option for students in South Sikkim who want a government diploma with a stronger IT/CS focus rather than the core mechanical/civil streams that ATTC leans toward.
