Best Robotics Engineering Colleges in Bangalore, India – Career, Scope & Opportunities
What Is Robotics Engineering?
Robotics Engineering is a field of Engineering that deals with two major aspects of robots, i.e. building the robot and using computers for manipulating it. Building the robot includes designing, construction and operation of robots and the computer aspect include programming, controls, information processing and sensory feedback of robots.
To put it simply, robots are machines that do tasks that humans cannot do or will not do. Some tasks require precision and repetition with complete accuracy. These tasks cannot be accomplished due to human error and inconsistency whereas other tasks are simply too dangerous for humans to perform, such as mining and bomb diffusion. Robots accomplish these tasks as per their programming and thus aide human endeavors.
Robotics Engineering is a highly multifaceted field as the process of designing and using robots is multidisciplinary. Robotics Engineering borrows from mechanical engineering, kinematics and dynamics, electrical and electronics engineering, software engineering, computer integrated manufacturing, biological mechanics etc.
Designing the structure of the robot is based on principles of mechanical engineering, the movements are based on kinematics and dynamics, the internal components require knowledge of electrical engineering, sensors are controlled by electromechanical engineering and software engineering allows for the programming of robots.
Previously, each of these tasks was being completed by an engineer from each specific field but as the demand for robots has grown, there is a new field of engineering being offered to students so they can get training in all the fields involved in making and using robots.
As automation becomes more and more popular, robots are becoming common in many different applications such as assembly in manufacturing, military robots, medical robots, agricultural robots, household robots such as automatic vacuum cleaners etc.
As new avenues for automation come up, this field is on the boom. For those who have an interest in automation and mechanics, as well as proficiency in programming and a flair for innovative thinking to research new applications of robots, Robotics Engineering is an ideal field.
Currently, in India, Robotics Engineering is offered by a very limited number of institutes as this field requires institutions to have state of the art infrastructure which is lacking in many Indian colleges. This field is offered at a number of different levels including a diploma course, bachelor’s degree, master’s degree etc.
Duration:
Duration for Robotics Engineering varies as per the level at which it is being offered. Diploma and undergraduate courses span over 4 years whereas a master’s degree can be completed in 2 years.
All these courses are usually offered in a biannual semester format whereby theory and practicals are taught simultaneously.
Specializations:
Robotics Engineering in itself is a highly specialized field, therefore there are usually no further specializations offered at the undergraduate level. However, there are some specializations available at the master’s level and even more so at the Ph.D. level. Some of the specializations within the field of robotics engineering are mentioned below:

General Eligibility Criteria:
Those who are interested in pursuing robotics engineering must have a background in physics, mathematics and other subjects in the science stream.
At the undergraduate level (Bachelors in Engineering or Bachelors in Technology), candidates who have completed 10+2 from any recognized state, national or international board with 55% aggregate score in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics or Biology can apply for this course.
Alternatively, candidates who have completed a diploma in robotics technology or automation technology are also eligible. At the Masters level, candidates who have completed B.E./B.Tech/B.Sc in any of the below fields of engineering are eligible to apply:
- Electronics Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Electrical Engineering
- Computer Science or Software Engineering
- Instrumentation & Control Engineering
- Electrical and Electronics Engineering
The entry requirement for diploma courses varies at the institute level, generally, it is the same as undergraduate requirements but with more relaxed score requirements.
Admission Procedures:
- Download admission form from university website/collect admission form from a university campus
- Fill out the complete form with accurate information, attach copies of all relevant documents as prescribed by the university or college. This usually includes educational certificates, identity proof, birth proof etc.
- Appear for relevant entrance examination as prescribed by the university or college. Some of the most common entrance tests for Robotics Engineering courses at the undergraduate level are:
- JEE MAINS
- JEE ADVANCE
- SRMJEEE
- Uttar Pradesh State Entrance Exam (UPSEE 2019)
- AP EAMCET 2019
- TS EAMCET 2019
- BITSAT 2019
For postgraduate courses, candidates may be required to appear for GATE.
- Await merit list based on entrance examination scores. Most universities prepare merit list solely on the basis of the entrance examination, therefore, performance in the entrance examination is key to gaining admission.
- If required by the university, appear for a personal interview followed by counseling. All original documents should be shown during counseling to secure admission. Some colleges may not have a personal interview or counseling session.
