Best Bachelor of Medical Lab Technology (BMLT) Colleges in Bangalore, India – Career, Scope & Job Opportunities

Bachelor of Medical Lab Technology is an undergraduate level course that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases by using laboratory-based equipment and procedures to ascertain the cause of the ailment and the possible course of action. Medical Lab Technology is a very vast field as it includes all types of procedures, equipment and techniques that can be used in a medical lab.

With the near constant advances in technology, this field is growing exponentially. This also means that the demand for professionals trained in this field is also growing at an unprecedented rate.

By and large, most courses train BMLT graduates to do the following:

  • Conducting and giving reports for tests such as blood, urine, feces, cerebrospinal fluid, synovial fluid, ascetic fluid etc.
  • Preparing standard solutions used for analysis used in a medical lab.
  • Ensure safety within the lab as chemicals can be dangerous and hazardous if not dealt with properly.
  • Handle and maintain all lab equipment from test tubes and centrifuges to sophisticated machinery like x-ray machines.
  • Maintain and organize the operation theatre including sterilization, arranging operation table, dressing table, instrument table and anesthesia table, preparing drugs, anesthesia gases and all other equipment and apparatus that a doctor might need to perform surgery.

BMLT graduates can work in a vast array of fields as a lot of different types of job profiles are suitable for those who are trained in the above aspects.

Duration:

In India, BMLT courses are offered over a span of 3 years, some institutes may require an internship after this although this is not the case in most institutes.

As this course involves hands-on learning with a good amount of time spent in labs, this course is not offered in the distance learning mode as this would compromise learning in a significant way.

Specializations:

To the advantage of students, institutes in India do not offer any scope for specialization in BMLT courses. This means students have some level of knowledge in a variety of fields of Medical Lab Technology. This means graduates can choose to specialize in any field of Medical Lab Technology after getting an idea on the basics of all the fields.

This means they can have a better idea and be sure of what specialization they would like to choose rather than blindly choosing at the undergraduate level.

If one is really sure of what specialization they would like to pursue right after 10+2, they can opt for one of the more specialized undergraduate courses such as B.Sc in Radiology or Anesthesia etc.

If one wants to specialize by doing a Postgraduate Diploma or Masters, they can choose one of these fields of specialization:

  • Microbiology
  • Clinical chemistry
  • Clinical biochemistry
  • Biostatistics
  • Molecular Biology and Applied Genetics
  • Clinical Pathology
  • Hematology

General Eligibility Criteria:

The minimum entry requirement for admission into BMLT courses is passing Higher Secondary Certificate boards. Many colleges require a minimum of 50% score in this examination (this is relaxed by 5% for Schedule Cast/Schedule Tribe applicants).

It is compulsory to have pursued the Science stream at the 10+2 level in order to be eligible for this course. Some colleges only accept those who have taken Physics, Chemistry and Biology while others accept comparable vocational subjects if they are suitable for this field.

Admission Procedure:

Many colleges in India now make it possible for students to apply online for admission while others still do not have such facilities. Depending on the college, applicants must fill out a form online or by getting a physical copy of the form from the college itself.

Candidates must attach copies of all required documents including educational certificates and identity proof. Following this, there may be an admission test or directly a counseling round. Followed by this, candidates will be notified if they have got admission in the course of their choice.

Institutes may require applicants to take an entrance examination or aptitude test. Some colleges define merit on the basis of Higher Secondary scores alone while others take entrance examination scores into account. Additionally, some colleges also conduct personal interviews before giving admission.

These details vary across colleges so candidates must familiarize themselves with the admission procedure for the college of their choice.

Regardless of the admission process, admission deadlines are extremely important as missing a deadline may result in failure to gain admission despite being highly eligible for the course. Thus, candidates must adhere to deadlines strictly.
