Bachelor of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology is an undergraduate level course that, as the name suggests, deals with two major fields: Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology.

Audiology deals with identifying impaired hearing, hearing problems or balance problems (As balance is deeply related to ear functioning), prevention of hearing loss and rehabilitation of persons suffering from hearing impairment or disorders.

Speech-Language Pathology, on the other hand, deals with all aspects of verbal communication, including identifying and rehabilitating speech and language disorders. This includes the ability to learn language skills and use said skills by way of speech in order to communicate effectively.

Speech-Language pathology also involves identifying and rehabilitating swallowing disorders as these often seem to be interrelated to speech and language issues. Therefore, this degree deals with three aspects of human communication

i) Audiology/hearing: that allows one to receive communication

ii) Language: that allows one to interpret communication and

iii) Speech: that allows one to respond to the communication.

Duration:

Bachelor in Audiology & Speech-Language Pathology is a 4-year long course. This duration includes 6 semesters (3 years) of full-time study followed by 2 semesters (10 months) of a compulsory clinical internship. This course is rarely offered in the distance mode as a fair amount of practical work and interaction with patients is required in order to complete this course successfully.

Specializations:

Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology are fairly new fields of study with most the research in this field being published after world-war II. As with most other fields that have come up in recent history, this field is also already highly focused and specialized in its approach.

Therefore, currently, there is no room for specialization at either the undergraduate or master’s level. One may choose to narrow down the focus of their study at the Ph.D. level.

General Eligibility Criteria for BASLP in Bangalore 2023:

Graduates of BASLP often work with handicapped patients and therefore they are governed by the rules of the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI). As per RCI rules, the minimum eligibility criteria for admission into BASLP courses across India is:

i) Candidate must have successfully completed 10+2 from any recognized state, national or international board

ii) Candidate must have pursued Physics, Chemistry and one of Biology/Mathematics/Computer Science/Statistics/ Electronics/Psychology.

Additional to RCI rules, colleges often require candidates to have secured a minimum aggregate score of 50%, however, this is at the discretion of the college and may vary from institution to institution.

Admission Procedure for BASLP Course as per Bangalore University in 2023:

Admission into the BASLP course is based on merit in 10+2 examinations. Many colleges also conduct an entrance examination or grant admission on the basis of national entrance examinations such as the test conducted by the All India Institute of Speech and Hearing. Depending on the college, merit lists may be prepared on the basis of 10+2 examination scores, entrance examination scores or a combination of both.

Candidates can apply online or by securing an admission form from the college campus. Once completed, the form is to be submitted with copies of all relevant documents attached.

This includes all board examination results, identity proof and any other documents mentioned by the institute itself. Once the candidate is shortlisted, many colleges will conduct interviews either in groups or individually.
