Only a nurse can tell you what and who inspired them to take up nursing as their career and what it is to work as a career. Pam Colvin, MSN, RN, CEN, Nurse Manager, Legacy ER & Urgent Care, Coppell, Texas, says “My passion for nursing stems from being influenced by two incredible historical leaders – Clara Barton and Mother Theresa. Neither are traditional nurses by occupation, but both spent their lives serving people in times of hardship, loss, and devastation. Their example has inspired me to love nursing by making a difference in the lives of others. The early foundation of Clara Barton’s vision and the compassion and selfless service of Mother Theresa have been constant reminders throughout my nursing career of what really matters. Despite the challenges, it is a calling and a love unending.”

“Save one life you are a hero.

Save 100 lives, you’re a nurse.”

Needless to say, nursing is a very humble and noble job. As the saying goes, nursing is a work of a heart. In one word, a nurse is an altruist. Here’s a definition that best explains who a nurse is, “a medical professional who uses experience, empathy, scientific knowledge, and instinct when assessing patients.”

Yes, it is true that it is doctors who treat the patient. But, 90% of the times, it is nurses who take care of the patients. Without nurses’ aid, even a successful surgery/treatment would fail to save a patient’s life.

If you have considered on becoming a nurse, I encourage you to become one. If you are one of among the rare who wears compassion on your sleeve and is service minded, I dare say no other job can give you as much satisfaction as nursing does.
