Martin Luther Christian University (MLCU) is Meghalaya’s first private deemed university and its School of Law is the most sought-after law institution in the state. The law program combines traditional legal education with specialisation in Indigenous Peoples’ Rights, Customary Law, and Tribal Jurisprudence — unique strengths relevant to Northeast India. NEHU is the premier central university of Northeast India and its Department of Law is the most affordable BCI-approved law program in Meghalaya. As a central university, NEHU offers SC/ST fee waivers, central government scholarships, and a robust legal research environment. The NEHU campus in Shillong is also the state’s largest university campus with comprehensive hostel and library facilities.

St Edmund’s College is one of the oldest and most prestigious colleges in Meghalaya, established in 1924 by the De La Salle Brothers. Its Law department offers a 3-year LLB program affiliated with NEHU. The heritage campus and strong academic culture make it a preferred choice. The college has produced some of Meghalaya’s most eminent lawyers and public servants over its century of operation.

Shillong Law College is a government-aided institution offering one of the most affordable LLB programs in the Northeast. Affiliated with NEHU and BCI-approved, it offers the 3-year LLB with a focus on practical legal training including court visits to the Meghalaya High Court and District Courts. A large proportion of the state’s practising advocates are alumni of this institution.

Tura Government Law College is the primary law institution serving West and South Garo Hills districts of Meghalaya. BCI-approved and government-funded, it offers the 3-year LLB at extremely affordable fees. Students from Garo-speaking communities benefit from proximity to Tura district courts for practical training and article clerkship after graduation.
