Mining Engineering:

The ground beneath our feet contains endless reserves of natural resources and minerals and as we all know, extracting these valuable minerals is a very complicated task that is made up of different processes.

You’ll surely agree to that if you’ve watched mining-inspired movies such as ‘The Treasure of the Sierra Madre’, ‘There Will Be Blood’ or even our very own ‘KGF: Chapter I’.

Mining is large-scale, not only because of the process but also due to different kinds of materials that are found. Coal, minerals, metals, stone, chalk, limestone, natural gases, and oil are just some of the geological materials that are stationed deep inside the subsurface of the earth.

Mining has been prevalent since the ancient ages as our archaic ancestors took stone and ceramics that were close to the surface of the earth. It was only around 43,000 years ago that humans began to go deeper into the surface of the earth in order to carry out full-scale mining operations.

Mining is the least simplistic career to pursue. Discovering an ore body in itself is a challenging task. Studying the area and its geological properties before setting up the required infrastructural foundation and then deploying suitable mining techniques makes it a very lengthy job.

Thus, getting into the field of mining needs comprehensive educational training and the best way to chart your way into the massive mining sector is via the Mining Engineering Course.

The most popular of the lot is the Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) in Mining Engineering and we’ll take a close look at the same in the upcoming sections…

B.Tech. In Mining Engineering Duration:

The course is 4 years long that contains a total of 8 semesters. There are some colleges that offer a Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) in Mining Engineering course, which is also 4 years long and is similar to the B.Tech variant in terms of the course content.

Each year has two semesters with each term containing a minimum of 5 or more subjects. Some colleges also offer a summer-internship opportunity in the 3rd semester.

There are colleges that also offer a 3-year diploma in Mining Engineering for candidates who pass their 10th grade.

B.Tech. In Mining Engineering Eligibility Criteria:

  • Candidate must have completed 10+2 from recognized board under the science stream
  • The candidate must have scored at least 50% in compulsory subject combination Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
  • Clearing an entrance exam would also be mandatory
  • There are colleges that curate and conduct their own entrance exams. The other option is to clear the nationally accepted exam – JEE Main, or, any of the tests officially conducted by the respective states’ statutory boards.
  • A handful of colleges would admit students based in 10+2 examination scores.
  • Candidates who have completed a 3-year diploma can get admission into the B.Tech. in Mining Engineering course from the second year onwards through the lateral entry scheme. This applies only in a handful of colleges though.

B.Tech. in Mining Engineering Admission Process:

  • Making a list of colleges that suit what your looking for should be the first step. Make sure the colleges that you shortlist match your requirements based on the following factors:
    • Fees
    • Location
    • Placement opportunities
    • Infrastructure
    • Campus life
    • Extracurricular activities
    • Industry exposure
    • Faculty
    • College reputation
  • Once you’ve listed down the colleges you would like to target, you would need to get the application forms from the college website or the respective campuses.
  • Fill the form, collect all the documents, mark sheets, and a few passport size photographs, and submit all of them back to the college before the deadline.
  • Get the entrance exam details and give the same.
  • Once the exam results are released, colleges will put out the merit lists.
  • If your name appears on the merit list, all that’s left to do it to pay the first’s year’s fee and confirm your admission.

B.Tech. Mining Engineering Average Fees:

The average course fee is Rs. 52,000 per semester. When you total it all up, the fee comes up to Rs. 1.04 lakhs per year and Rs. 4.16 lakhs for the entire course.

Some of the reputed private institutions charge between Rs. 1.5 – 2.6 lakhs per year (6 – 10.4 for 4 years). If you are looking for a college with lower fees, there are institutes that offer the course for as low as Rs. 15,000 per semester as well, however, getting admissions in those colleges would be a challenging task.

Nonetheless, there is absolutely no need to worry. Every bank provides student loans that can be easily paid back once the student completes their education and that too in affordable monthly installments.

B.Tech. In Mining Engineering Jobs and Future Scope:

India is responsible for producing around 95 minerals and they are of different nature – atomic, fuel-based, minor, metallic and non-metallic.

The Mining industry constitutes 11% of the total GDP and serves as the source of employment for more than 7 lakh people in India. India is considered to be one of the largest producers of minerals such as Kromite, Coal, Iron ore, Bauxite, and Alumina. Copper, Uranium, Petroleum, Mineral Oil, Manganese, Diamond, Lead ore, Mica, Apatite and Fire Clay are also top materials that are mined and processed. The steel industry is booming at a tremendous pace as well as the estimated production capacity of expected to go up to 300 million tonnes in the next 12 years.

Mining in India has been taking place for over 6000 years and continues to flourish with countless opportunities waiting to be exploited. Mining exploration and extraction companies and setting up projects all over the country and to oversee the operations, having a large team of Mining Engineers is a must. They are the backbone of the entire operation. The Indian mining industry is open to 100% FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) which has skyrocketed the number of projects and companies.

More companies have led to more projects that have directly impacted the multiplication of jobs in the sector.

And don’t worry, India has no shortage of minerals as the seventh largest country in the world still has various undiscovered surfaces waiting to be mined. It’s surprising but India still hasn’t fully realized the full extent of the reserves of natural resources, minerals and crude oil, which is mainly due to lazy assessment and also due to the British Raj.

It doesn’t even matter if you’re mining for gold, the mining sector if India is a figurative goldmine in every sense. Our strategic location that enables smooth channels of trade with different markets, especially the thriving scene in the Asian sub-continent, has contributed to the uninterrupted growth of the industry. It will only get better as time passes us by and you must not miss out.

So what are the kind of jobs, areas, and companies you may find in Mining Engineering? It’s alright to ponder over these questions. Let’s address them one at a time.
