B.Com + LLB

“If we desire respect for the law, we must first make the law respectable.” – Louis Brandies, American Lawyer and US Supreme Court Associate Justice

Law is indispensable. It upholds and glues together the framework of a country. The rules and regulations that are prescribed on the national and state levels are necessary to regulate actions of the citizens and disobedience of the same would lead to penalties. Everyone knows that, right? The Indian Constitution has been a regular feature in our syllabus right from our early school days which is why Laws and their importance need no introduction.

The spectrum of law, though, is enormous and thus, it’s a field that is broken down into different specialties. One of the sub-genres deals with everything relating to finance and commerce and that is what B.Com + LL is all about. Let’s go in a little deeper…

What is B.Com + LLB?

Before we get into B.Com + LLB, you should know that every Law College offers a standalone LLB course which requires the candidate to have a bachelor’s degree. Most students who wish to pursue law complete any of the well-known undergraduate courses such as B.A., B.Com, B.B.A. or B.Sc. and apply for a Legislative Law (L.L.B.) course.

However, many colleges now have an integrated programme which incorporates any of the undergraduate course + LLB in a 5-year course without any breaks. It’s a more efficient way of becoming a lawyer as the flow is seamless.

We will be focusing on B.Com. + LLB for the purpose of this article. B.Com is a universally popular course which boasts of a high demand amongst all undergraduate programmes. B.Com is all about business and its various financial aspects and aspiring lawyers who wish to get into financial disciplines such as taxation, business laws and corporate laws should pick the B.Com.+ LLB integrated course.

The first few years of B.Com. + LLB centers on the basic principles of commerce, business and administrative structure while the attention in subsequent years shifts to the legal studies that are needed to become a lawyer in the corporate sector. If you are interested in commerce subjects and financial aspects of law, then pursuing a B.Com + LLB is the fitting option.

B.Com. + LLB Duration

B.Com. + LLB is a 5-year integrated undergraduate course which has a total of 10 semesters. There are 2 semesters in each year consisting of a minimum of 5 or more subjects. While you are expected to finish the course in at 5 years, candidates are provided a maximum of 8 years to clear all subjects and complete the programme.

Those who are not interested in commerce have other Law-related alternatives too, which we’ve listed down below:

  • Bachelor of Legislative Law (L.L.B.) (3 years)
  • Bachelor of Legislative Law Honors (L.L.B. Hons.) (3 years)
  • Bachelor of Arts + Bachelor of Legislative Law (B.A. + L.L.B.) (5 years)
  • Bachelor of Arts + Bachelor of Legislative Law Honors (B.A. + L.L.B. ) (5 years)
  • Bachelor of Business Administration + Bachelor of Legislative Law (B.B.A. + L.L.B.) (5 years)

For now, let’s just stick to B.Com. + LLB…
