Best Biotechnology Engineering Colleges in Bangalore

OVERVIEW:

The term “Biotechnology” is derived from the words “Biology” and “Technology”. Expanding it furthermore it can be best defined as the application of biological knowledge in the development of products/processes that can improve various aspects of life like health, food supply, environmental issues and general well-being. As Andrew says, “Biotechnology is going to change the way we interact with the natural world”.

One of its major applications in the medical field is the production of pharmaceutical drugs and vaccines that help prevent and cure diseases. However, its application is not restricted to medicine alone.

Some of its major non-medical applications include the production of transgenic crops in various culture sectors, manufacturing of micro-bio enzymes and solving environmental issues like pollution.

WHY BIOTECHNOLOGY OF ALL THE COURSES OUT THERE?

Bioengineering can change the color of the flower throughout the day from pink to blue and back again. Now, ain’t that beautiful? Wait, Flowers are beautiful just the way they are. Why would someone want to change its natural color? But, that’s only an epitome of the power of Biotechnology. As Keira says, there’s a misunderstanding that genetically manipulated organisms are unnatural and aren’t necessary.

In one of her Tedtalks, she says “There’s wonder and promise in science, especially in Biotechnology.”She gives a glimpse about how Biotechnology that is well designed and carefully engineered can make a difference in the world. Here’s one such example she mentioned in the talk.

There’s a huge demand for Insulin and chymosin as they are both very essential for human life. These two proteins are produced in animal tissues and we used to grind out animal tissues after animal tissues to extract the protein we needed. Thanks to Biotechnology, these days using genetically modified bacteria we can grow these in a broth of sugar and nutrients. “Now, Biotechnology hasn’t made insulin and chymosin any prettier, but it has made the process of making them a lot more less gross.”

Here’s what makes Biotechnology beautiful in Keira’s own words.

“Biotechnology is the way of working with nature to engineer more utility, more food and more beauty. If we have the opportunity to work with nature to create with it, instead of destroying it, I think we should take it.”

WHO IS IT FOR?

Biotech engineering gets interesting and dynamic as it involves creating and developing. It makes you want to jump out of the bed every morning to create something new and solve real-time problems.

The field of Biotech Engineering is extensively research driven which requires a lot of independent work and patience. If you are research-oriented, analytical minded and if your brain itches to solve problems, then this definitely is the go-to course for you.

DURATION & ELIGIBILITY

Duration Of Biotechnology Engineering is as same as any other stream of Engineering. B.Tech. Biotechnology Engineering is a 4-year undergraduate program. Each year is divided into 2 semesters leading to a total of 8 semesters in 4 years.

If you are looking for a distance mode of the course, you will be disappointed. Since Biotechnology Engineering or any Engineering for that matter needs practical knowledge along with all that theoretical knowledge, colleges don’t provide distance education as an option, So, You have to opt for a full-time course if you want to become an Engineer.

Eligibility Criteria:

Biotechnology Engineering courses can get as competitive and tough as they can, I have no intention of making you nervous about the course, but that is what it is. As mentioned earlier this course demands passion, Analytical and Problem Solving skills, apart from those here are a list of criteria you need to fulfill while applying to any of the Best Biotechnology Engineering Colleges in Bangalore or anywhere else in India.

  • You should have completed 10+2 with an aggregate of 50% in Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects along with Chemistry or Biology or any technical vocational subjects. This may slightly differ depending on the university.
  • Few Universities consider biology or mathematics or both as compulsory subjects.
  • It is mandatory to pass at least one of the entrance exams like JEE for top universities like IIT and NIT. Some of the popular entrance exams are JEE, CET, EAMCET, VITEEE and KCET.

SPECIALIZATION:

Biotech engineers are expected to have a solid understanding of basic theoretical concepts of chemistry, mathematics and physics as well as practical skills to apply the theoretical knowledge to solve real-time problems.

Some of its major specializations the course offers are listed below

  • Microbiology
  • Molecular biology
  • Genetics
  • Immunology
  • Pharmaceutical research
  • Biochemistry
  • Biophysics
  • Animal biotech
  • Plant biotech
  • Enzyme engineering
  • Bioprocess principles

SCOPE & CAREER OPPORTUNITIES:

Biotech engineering is a research-driven interdisciplinary science with multiple practical applications in various fields like food production, medicine, healthcare, bio-products, agriculture, animal science, environmental conservation, chemicals, drug and pharmaceutical research and many others in line with industrial needs.

As we just discussed, the scope of Biotechnology is very vast. A biotech graduate is spoiled with an awful lot of career opportunities. Soon after graduation, one can either immediately start working or pursue higher education.

Learning never ends, does it? There’s always something new to learn about. New inventions and discoveries can just be around the corner. The importance of staying up to date cannot be stressed enough. With the help of new technologies and discoveries, it has become much easier to build new products and to improvise existing ones. But to keep yourself updated and improve your skills you might have to pursue Higher Education, M.Tech & Ph.D. are the best ways to go if you ask me.

Further studies in Biotechnology (M.Tech / Ph.D.) promises a vast array of career opportunities. Specialization in the clinical trial is a brownie point to pursue a career in clinical research. One can also choose to take up courses that aren’t directly related to Biotechnology like biology associated law degrees and MBA.

It is compulsory to pass competitive entrance exams like GATE to pursue a Masters Degree. Few Universities require students to undergo additional selection procedures.

For those who choose to study further, here are few niche masters programs one can pursue

  • Master of Engineering in Biotechnology
  • Masters in Plant and Forest Biotechnology
  • Masters in Biotechnology enterprise and entrepreneurship
  • Masters in Biotechnology and Bioinformatics
  • Sensor System Engineering
  • Masters in Protein science and Biotechnology
  • Masters in Molecular and Medical Biotechnology
  • Masters in Biotechnology Applied to Conservation and Sustainable Management of Plant Resources
  • Masters in Biotechnology of Environment and Health
  • Masters in Chemical and Biotechnology Process Engineering
  • Masters degree in Advanced Biotechnology
  • Masters in Chemical Technology and Biotechnology
  • Masters in Applied Biotechnology

Based on one’s specialization and experience, this course provides various career opportunities. Few of the major careers are listed below.

  • Professor in subjects related Biotechnology
  • Research and development officer in research institutes, universities, agricultural and clinical labs
  • Clinical research coordinator in hospitals and pharmaceutical firms
  • Quality control and quality analyst of pharmaceutical, healthcare and other industries
