Introduction – What Genetic Engineering Is All About?

Genetic Engineering, most commonly known in India as a subfield of biotechnology, is the process of altering the genetic makeup of living organisms in order to make them act differently from their current/natural characteristics.

Genetic Engineers add or remove specific genes from living organisms so the organism displays favorable traits or stops displaying unfavorable traits. For example, genetic engineering can allow plants to be more resistant to pests, fruits or vegetables to grow faster or bigger or even change the eye color or fur of animals.

Genetic Engineering is different from Genetics as Genetic Engineering is focused on the methodology employed in order to make modification whereas Genetics is the pure study of genes and their characteristics. Genetic Engineering encompasses biochemistry, cell biology, molecular biology, evolutionary biology and medical genetics.Combined, these techniques can be used in agriculture, industrial biotechnology and medicine.

Genetic modification can help in treating diseases by arming humans with the genes necessary to fight certain infections or by correcting genetically transmitted diseases. It can help in advancing healthcare by allowing for new vaccines and medication to be invented. Genetic Engineering is most commonly used in agriculture to increase yield or to produce more favorable fruits or vegetables.

Duration:

Genetic Engineering at the undergraduate level can be pursued by doing B.Tech in Genetic Engineering, Bachelor of Engineering in Genetic Engineering or B.Sc in Genetic Engineering. One can also pursue Biotechnology and specialize in Genetic Engineering.

All of the above-mentioned courses span over 4 years with 2 semesters per year where students are trained & tested in practical and theoretical knowledge at the end of every semester. This course cannot be pursued in the distance mode as this course is based largely on practical laboratory work.

Specializations:

Genetic Engineering in itself is a specialization of Biotechnology. As this course is already specialized, generally candidates cannot specialize further at the undergraduate level. However, here are some of the subfields of Genetic Engineering that can be pursued at the higher level.

  • Behavioral genetics
  • Classical genetics
  • Clinical genetics
  • Genetic algorithms
  • Genomics
  • Molecular genetics
  • Population, quantitative and ecological genetics

General Eligibility Criteria:

Candidates wishing to pursue an undergraduate course in Genetic Engineering must complete 10+2 from any recognized state, national or international level with Biology, Chemistry and Physics/Mathematics with a minimum aggregate score of 60%.

Alternatively, candidates who have an undergraduate degree in an allied field are also eligible to apply.

Admission Procedures:

Admission procedures for Genetic Engineering courses vary across institutes. The general admission procedure for must institutions is mentioned below.

  • Download admission form from university website/collect admission form from the university campus
  • Fill out the complete form with accurate information, attach copies of all relevant documents as prescribed by the university or college. This usually includes educational certificates, identity proof, birth proof etc.
  • Appear for relevant entrance examination as prescribed by the university or college. Some of the most common entrance tests for Genetic Engineering are:
    • JEE Mains
    • JEE ADVANCE
    • SRMJEEE
    • VITEEE
    • BIT SAT
    • JEE Advanced (required for all IITs)
  • Await merit list based on entrance examination scores. Most universities prepare merit list solely on the basis of the entrance examination, therefore, performance in the entrance examination is key to gaining admission.
  • If required by the university, appear for a personal interview followed by counseling. All original documents should be shown during counseling to secure admission. Some colleges may not have a personal interview or counseling session.

Top Colleges that offer Genetic Engineering courses in India:

Genetic Engineering is not a very common course in India due to the limited scope of employment. However, there is a demand for qualified researchers abroad.

In order to make oneself employable at world-class research institutes, one must graduate from a top university or college. Some of the top universities for Genetic Engineering in India are:

  • All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi
  • Aryabhatta Knowledge University, Patna
  • Bharath University, Chennai
  • Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi
  • Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur
  • Indian Institute of Technology, Madras
  • SRM University, Chennai

Best Genetic Engineering Colleges in Bangalore:

  • Indian Institute of Science, (IISc), Bangalore
  • CMA College
  • RV College of Engineering
  • AVK & NSVK Institutes
  • A. M. C. College of Engineering
  • R. V. College of Engineering
  • R N S Institute of Technology
  • Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology
  • Sambhram Institute of Technology
  • Sir M. Visweswarayya Institute of Technology
  • Sri. B. V. V. S. Basaveswara Engg. College
  • University Visveswaraya College of Engineering

Scope:

There is very limited scope for genetic engineering in India due to the lack of finance in research. Additionally, there are moral issues in pursuing genetic engineering as the Indian mindset is not encouraging of such treatments yet.

However, there is a good scope for Genetic Engineering abroad. Graduates in this field can expect to work in one of the following fields:

  • Agriculture
  • Medicine
  • Research
  • Industrial Biotechnology
  • Chemical Industries

Career Opportunities:

Genetic Engineering is such a field where it is very important to pursue postgraduate education and even Ph.D. as there is not much scope with a basic undergraduate degree.

Undergraduate degree holders can expect to work as a research assistant or lab managers. For higher level jobs, candidates must have a masters degree at least. If you choose to pursue higher education you can expect to find work as:

  • Genetic Engineers
  • Information Security Engineer
  • Lecturer/ Professor
  • Research Scientist
  • Scientific/ Medical Writer

Salary:

The salary prospects for undergraduate degree holders in India are fairly bleak with a starting salary of Rs 10,000. However, graduates of the top colleges such as IIT can easily expect to earn between Rs 20,000 to Rs 35,000.

In the government sector, the pay is lower than in private industries. With higher qualification candidates can expect to earn between Rs 3.5 to 7 lacs per annum. Salary prospects are definitely much higher abroad than in India.

Recruiting Companies

Genetic Engineering is not a very big industry in India as there is not much investment in this field. Therefore, most genetic engineers in India end up working for government research institutes. Some of the top research institutes that are currently recruiting genetic engineers in India are:

  • Biochemical Engineering Research and Process Development Centre, Chandigarh
  • Centre for DNA Fingerprint and Diagnostics, Hyderabad
  • Institute of Genomic and Integrative Biology, New Delhi
  • National Institute of Immunology, New Delhi

Genetic Engineering is a very interesting field for those who have the aptitude for it. Although the current Indian market is not leaning towards this field, this scenario might change in the future. If one has an analytical mind, focus, patience, aptitude for research and the physical stamina to spend long hours in laboratories, Genetic Engineering is a growing and popular field worldwide.
