B.Sc. Nautical Science in Maharashtra

Ever been fascinated by the grandiose ambiance of the ocean? Have you harbored aspirations of sailing for endless hours on a majestic ship? Ever wondered how sailors manage to travel inconceivable lengths of the ocean from one end of the globe to another without getting lost in the seemingly infinite sights of blueness? Do you get inspired by iconic navigators like Vasco Da Gama and Christopher Columbus?

You are at the right place, reading the right article, as there is no better course than B.Sc. in Nautical Science if you wish to realize your dreams of spearheading a titanic ship.

Nautical Science, as the name suggests, deals with everything relating to the boundless water bodies of the world. Navigating in the sea and managing ships can be incredibly complicated processes. B.Sc. in Nautical Science consists of a curriculum that gives candidates an in-depth look into setting up a career in the profitable marine industry.

Let’s go deeper then, shall we…

What is B.Sc. in Nautical Science?

Maritime studies are just as broad as the ocean. You may have seen ships and marveled at its sheer size and engineering. There are a plethora of equipments and tools on a ship that needs to be operated and managed efficiently. More so, you can’t just be dependent on basic google maps knowledge when you are sailing in the ocean, thus, understanding the geography of the water bodies and how to navigate through them is a pivotal aspect in merchant navy.

B.Sc. in Nautical Science essentially involves the theoretical and practical knowledge imparted in areas such as navigation, cargo handling, chart work, meteorology, ship maintenance, seamanship, collision prevention, watchkeeping, ship stability, equipment handling and marine signaling.

A candidate who completes a B.Sc. in Nautical Science is assigned the duties of a deck cadet or deck officer on board of a ship or vessel. It should be noted that the course differs from Marine Engineering, as candidates who complete Marine Engineering are tasked with operating and managing the heavy marine machinery on a ship.

B.Sc. in Nautical Science graduates joins the Deck crew while Marine Engineers are absorbed in the engine crew of a ship.

B.Sc. in Nautical Science focuses in overseeing navigation and relevant on-deck activities along with the management skills needed to cohesively streamline all the operations on a ship.

Career Path after Completing B.Sc. in Nautical Science

Pursuing a career in maritime operations can often be confusing for a fresh 10+2 pass out with little to no knowledge about the merchant navy.

A fresh B.Sc. in Nautical Science graduate can join a ship as a training/deck cadet and then move up the hierarchy as given below:

  • Training/ Deck Cadet
  • Third Officer
  • Second Officer
  • Chief Officer
  • Captain

Now, there are a few prerequisites for deck cadets before they can be eligible for a promotion to a Third mate and beyond. The requirements are as follows:
