Post Basic Bachelor of Science (P.B.B.Sc.) in Nursing
Nursing is an underrated profession. It’s an area of work that has consistently attracted large numbers of people, however, they don’t always get the deserved credit.
The doctors are always at the forefront of the medical sector, while in reality, the gigantic healthcare industry will cease to exist without the priceless services of nurses. It’s a fact and you may surely attest to that if you recollect your trips to the hospital.
In it’s simplest form, Nursing is the profession that involves offering care and diagnostic support to people who are sick. The practice of Nursing has been around since the fifth century BC.
‘Male attendants’ were tasked with the job of providing care to patients during that time as revealed in the medical teachings imparted by the ‘Father of Medicine’, Hippocrates. Nursing has evolved immensely since its ancient beginnings, as it has now become a female-dominated domain.
A majority of the nurses are women these days, and that’s pretty ironic, as the earliest nurses known to civilization were men. Nonetheless, the male-to-female ratio is changing for the good as more men are breaking past the social stigma and are taking up nursing as a career.
In order to meet the high demand for nurses from around the world, there are different undergraduate educational pathways set in place for aspiring nurses to pick. There is a short-term Diploma and long-term B.Sc. In Nursing as well.
However, for the purpose of this article, we’ll take a look at the third option, which is considered to be the most efficient of the lot – P.B.B.Sc. In Nursing.
What is Post Basic Bachelor of Science (P.B.B.Sc.) in Nursing?
Post Basic Bachelor of Science (P.B.B.Sc.) in Nursing is an undergraduate course that is viewed more as a foundation undergraduate course.
There are colleges that offer a 4-year B.Sc. Course in Nursing, but P.B.B.Sc. is a viable alternative. P.B.B.Sc. in Nursing is for students who have completed a diploma in Nursing (General Nursing and Midwifery).
The GNM course is 3 years long (+6 months internship) and doing another 4-year B.Sc Nursing is not considered feasible. Thus, to enable diploma holders to get a Bachelor’s degree in nursing, many institutes offer the P.B.B.Sc. In Nursing programme.
P.B.B.Sc. In Nursing touches upon all the essential principles of nursing. It helps strengthen the fundamentals and familiarizes the students with different nursing activities and routine procedures.
The programme deals with topics such as Nutrition, dietetics, nursing administration, medical and surgical nursing, maternal nursing, child health nursing, sociology, mental health nursing, microbiology, psychology, etc.
Students are taught about the ways and means to deal with different kind of patients, the methods of administrating drugs, basic and advanced biological knowledge and an understanding regarding the different ailments and diseases that nurses may encounter on a regular basis.
Nurses are expected to be mentally strong as they would have to deal with nerve-racking situations at times. The course also helps students to remain calm in times of panic.
Post Basic Bachelor of Science (P.B.B.Sc.) in Nursing Course Duration
P.B.B.Sc. in Nursing is 2 years long, which is broken down into 4 semesters. Each year consists of 2 semesters with each term having a minim of 5 subjects or more.
As mentioned earlier, colleges even offer a 4-year Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Nursing, which is eligible for 10+2 candidates.
Candidates who have completed the GNM course are advised to take up the P.B.B.Sc. In Nursing.

Post Basic Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Nursing Jobs and Future Scope
The billion-dollar healthcare industry is the fourth largest employer in India and nursing has a big role to play in that.
Despite nearly 2 million registered nurses across the country, India is still short of another 2 million nurses. Believe it or not, the demand for nurses is at an all-time high. It’s not a surprising demand to have as the rapid development when it comes to healthcare infrastructure is contributing to the number of jobs that are available.
The Government of India’s sustained efforts to improve the healthcare sector has led to over 98 projects being sanctioned in rural and urban areas. Chain hospitals such as Fortis, Metropolis and Apollo are diversifying their operations at a brisk pace, and none of them can survive without a large team of nurses.
Almost $6 Billion has been pumped into the healthcare sector via Foreign Direct Investments in recent years. The funds are being utilized to establish hospitals, medical facilities and clinics all around the country. Nursing jobs were always there and will continue to increase as time passes on.
There are many reasons why the field of Nursing will never see a decline. People will continue to fall sick, the population will continue to increase and the expansion of the medical industry will never slow down. Nurses are a vital cog at every level.
