What is Diploma in Nursing about?
Now before we go any further, there are two types of Diploma Nursing courses, they are:
- Auxiliary Nurse Midwifery (A.N.M.)
- General Nursing and Midwifery (G.N.M.)
We’ll go deeper into each of the variations given above later on in the article, but first, let’s shed some light on what a candidate would learn as part of the nursing course.
Diploma Nursing courses primarily focus on all the fundamental principles of patient care. Nurses not only have to deal with patients but also communities, families and other groups. A nurse’s job involves many aspects and procedures, which are of major emphasis during the course.
A hospital or any medical setup for that matter is made of many departments and divisions, some of which are Intensive Care Unit (I.C.U.), burn center, pediatric care, emergency care, neonatal unit, etc. Nurses are needed in most divisions and it should be noted that the duties too vary, depending on the department.
Thus, Nurses are required to be well-versed with the different departments and their functions. Diplomas in Nursing aims at strengthening the foundation of aspiring nurses. They need to know all basic tasks such as record keeping, managing medical equipment, administrating medicines and injections and to keep track of various daily activities in a hospital.
Diploma in Nursing Duration:
The duration of both the types of Nursing Diploma courses differ.
* ANM – 2 Years (18 Months + 6 Months Internship) (1 year in some institutes)
As prescribed by the Indian Nursing Council, the 52-week schedule is broken down into, 43 weeks of teaching hours, 3 weeks in preparation and exams, 4 weeks of vacation, and 2 weeks of gazetted holidays.
* GNM – 3 years + 6 months internship
In total, there would be 1225 dedicated teaching hours in the GNM course with an additional 190 hours set aside for the internship. Candidates who have completed an ANM and are pursuing GNM can skip the training phase.
Diploma in Nursing Eligibility Criteria:
Eligibility Criteria For ANM(Auxiliary Nurse Midwifery)
- The candidate must be a minimum of 17 years old at the time of admission while the maximum age limit is set at 30
- Candidate must have passed 10+2 with a minimum aggregate score of at least 45% (40% for reserved categories such as SC/ST/OBCs). Some institutes even accept Class 10 pass-outs.
- Candidate must be from the science stream as the Nursing syllabus contains many principles of science and anatomy
- Medical fitness is a must
- Candidates from Arts, Commerce, and other vocational disciplines can also apply for the course, however, they would have to clear the National Institute of Open Schooling’s (NIOS) science exam.
Eligibility Criteria For GNM(General Nurse Midwifery)
- The candidate must have cleared 10+2 from a recognized board.
- The minimum cut-off is 40% and should ideally be from the science stream with subjects Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics (PCB), and English
- Medical fitness is a mandatory requirement for GNM as well
- Candidates from Arts, Commerce, and other vocational disciplines can also apply for the course, however, they would have to clear the National Institute of Open Schooling’s (NIOS) science exam.
What’s the difference between ANM and GNM?
I know it’s confusing when there are two Nursing courses at the Diploma level that pretty much sound the same. However, there is a big difference between the two courses. I’ll try and explain in its simplest form.
As the word suggests, Auxiliary stands for a group or individual person who provides additional support. Candidates who complete an ANM usually serve as assistant nurses to their more qualified and advances counterparts.
ANM is the career pathway towards becoming a certified registered nurse and is often a quick course taken up by candidates who can serve as health workers at the rural level.
As you may have figured by now, GNM is a comprehensive Nursing course that prepares Nurses for the challenging healthcare sector. The subjects and course curriculum differs between ANM and GNM as the level is noticeably higher in GNM.
The career prospects are also better after doing a GNM, thus, many candidates end up going for a GNM or a B.Sc. In Nursing.

- Download, fill and submit the admission forms on the college’s website. The forms can also be collected from the campus.
- If there are colleges that conduct an entrance exam, the details of the same will be provided by the college.
- If you make the merit list of the college you wish to join, the final step would be to pay a year or semester’s fees – which differs depending on the institute – to lock in a seat.

The written examinations conducted at the end of the year carries 75 marks while the internal assessment is worth 25 marks. Practicals carry 100 marks each for internal and external examinations.

The assessment for theory papers is worth 25% and practicals are for 50%. The course requires the student to be watchful to the following: Nursing care plans, maintenance of record books, case studies, daily diary, area-wise clinical assessment.
