Engineering/B.Tech in Maharashtra

Everyone would love to be an Engineer but not all of them would be willing to go through the curricular tussle. You may have seen the movie 3 Idiots, right? The struggle, folks, is real!

Engineering gets its name from Ingenium, which in Latin stands for cleverness and Ingenaire which means to a device or contrive. Engineering is not everyone’s cup of tea as it’s a very technical course and despite the pessimistic notions, it continues to be one of the most popular career options.

The demand for Engineering seats has considerably reduced over the years as many are choosing the more creatively satisfying professions that have courses that are shorter in duration. Out of the 15 lakh Engineering seats offered across the country, only 7.5 lakh seats are actually filled, which goes to show the current situation of Engineering.

It is, however, still a career that offers diversity in branches, job opportunities and professional options. If you are like Ranchoddas Chanchad whose passion is Engineering, then you shouldn’t let the negativity change your mind as you will undoubtedly prosper.

Before we get into the programme you should choose, let’s simply the Engineering education in India…

What is Engineering/B.Tech.?

There are two undergraduate courses for aspiring Engineers – Bachelor of Engineer (B.E.) and Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.).

Before you scratch your head wondering the difference, there isn’t much between the two as both hold the same value in the eyes of recruiters. The subjects and overall syllabus are pretty much the same but there is one distinct feature that sets B.Tech. apart from B.E.

B.Tech. is said to be more skill-based while B.E. is knowledge-based. B.Tech. is offered by institutes that specialize in providing engineering courses while B.E. is common in universities that contain a wide range of courses from different streams.

B.Tech. has more volume in terms of colleges and thus, we will be focusing on it for the purpose of this article.

It is a proper engineering course that teaches students to design, produce, maintain and manage a plethora of appliances, devices, structures, software and programs. In simple terms, it is the use of scientific and empirical data to engineer productivity and make everyday life more comfortable. You experience the marvels of engineering every day and you may not even realize it. The vehicle you use, the physical structures you see, the devices and appliances that help you are some of the basic things are products of engineering.

Without engineers, civilization would cease to exist.

Engineering/B.Tech. Course Duration

Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) is a 4-year undergraduate that is split into 8 semesters. The All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) has allotted candidates a maximum of 8 years to clear all pending backlogs and complete the course.

Ideally, though, the course should be finished in 4 years.

Engineering/B.Tech. Eligibility Criteria

  • The candidate must have passed 10+2 from a recognized board or university.
  • Candidate should be from the Science stream with compulsory subjects Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
  • The minimum cut-off is 50% which differs from institute to institute.
  • Students who have done a 3-year diploma can join the B.Tech. course from the second year. It’s through the Lateral entry programme to ensure a seamless transition.

Engineering/B.Tech. Admission Procedure

  • Shortlist colleges that match your preferences.
  • Download and fill admission forms. If the college website doesn’t provide the same, collect it from the campus.
  • Get details of the relevant entrance exam and complete the application process which may include paying a nominal fee.

Engineering/B.Tech. Course Syllabus and Branches

The syllabus and subjects change depending on the branch. However, there are a bunch of common science and communication subjects that are part of the syllabus across all streams.

Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, communication skills, computer-aided design, engineering mechanics and basic computer programming are mandatory for students of all streams.

The course is made up of lectures, seminars, practicals, workshops, industrial visits and internships. Written examinations are conducted at the end of every semester while the internal assessment is done via Viva Voce and projects. Some colleges may even have thesis work.

Check out the wide range of branches in B.Tech.:

Engineering/B.Tech. Average Course Fees

Most engineering colleges in Maharashtra charge around Rs. 80,000 – 1 lakh per year. Top institutes charge between the range of Rs 1.5 – 2.8 lakhs per year.

The course fee for B.Tech. in Maharashtra is comparatively higher than any other undergraduate course due to its technical nature and reputation.

Engineering/B.Tech. Scope and Job Opportunities

Engineering may not be the giant it once was when it comes to job scope but it still provides tremendous amounts of opportunities for B.Tech. graduates.

The number of streams in engineering itself is an encouraging sign regarding jobs. Every top engineering institute has a dedicated placement cell that guarantees close to 100% job placements.

Top recruiting companies absorb fresh candidates straight from the college and offer them attractive packages and profiles. Engineering in recent years has been suffering from general incompetency of graduates as a majority of qualified engineers have been deemed to be unemployable. They lack the technical and practical application of all principles and can’t keep up with the evolving technology.

Thus, there is a heightened need for well-trained engineers who are enthusiastic about the profession and actually know what they are doing. Engineers who are technically well-rounded and have the applicable knowledge should have no problems in finding jobs.

Here are some of the job profiles and roles for engineers from various branches:

  • Junior Engineer
  • Chief Engineer
  • Civil Engineer
  • Java Developer
  • Robotics Engineer
  • Control Systems Engineer
  • Development Engineer
  • Test Engineer
  • Mechanical Design
  • Research and Development Engineer
  • Product Development Engineer
  • Engineering Technologist

The average salaries for engineers who have mid-level experience range between Rs. 7-10 lakhs per annum. Freshers get Rs. 3-4 lakhs per annum straight out of college.

Students who score high scores attract top companies during placement drives. Recruiters offer packages to the tune of Rs. 12-30 lakhs per annum. There shouldn’t be a dearth of top companies knocking on your door if you are a top performer in your class.

Higher Studies After Engineering/B.Tech.

The perfect blend of experience and academic qualifications will take you to rewarding places in your career as an Engineer. Doing a PG degree will help you get an upper hand over competitors vying for similar jobs as well as enhancing your knowledge.

Master’s courses require thesis work to be done on new engineering trends that help in keeping up with the growing advancements. A B.Tech. graduate with 55% at graduation level and clearance of entrance exams such as GATE are eligible to pursue any of the following PG courses:

  • Master of Engineering (M.E.)
  • Master of Technology (M.Tech.)
  • Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.)
  • Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.)
  • Master of Science (M.Sc.)
  • Post Graduation diplomas

Some institutes would also need you to have a certain amount of experience. You can even pursue a PG course on a distance education basis and also continue to juggle work commitments at the same time. MBA graduates get top management positions in companies which have turned out to be one of the most sought-after choices for B.Tech. graduates.

PG courses in Engineering offer all important specializations which are available at the bachelor’s level too such as civil, chemical engineering, mechanical, electrical, etc
